Learn Serbian Cyrillic without guessing

Serbian Cyrillic is a sound-based alphabet with 30 letters. Learn the letter pairs, read real words, and practice switching between Latin and Cyrillic one small step at a time.

Serbian has two alphabets for the same language

Modern Serbian is written in both Cyrillic and Latin. The words and grammar do not change when the script changes: voda and вода both mean “water.” Once you know the matching letters, moving between the two scripts becomes a reading skill rather than a translation problem.

The alphabet is highly phonetic. Each letter normally represents one sound, so spelling is much more predictable than in English. The Latin combinations lj, nj, and each become one Cyrillic letter: љ, њ, and џ.

Beginner shortcut

Do not wait until you have memorized all 30 letters. Learn a small group, read several words with those letters, and then add the next group.

Start with words you can compare

Read each Latin form, then look for the same sounds in Cyrillic. Some letters look familiar, while others need deliberate practice.

Latin → Cyrillicmama → мамаmother
Latin → Cyrillicvoda → водаwater
Latin → Cyrillicškola → школаschool
Latin → Cyrillicljubav → љубавlove
Cyrillic → Latinкоњ → konjhorse
Cyrillic → Latinџеп → džeppocket

A simple Cyrillic practice plan

1RecognizeLearn letter soundsConnect each Cyrillic shape to its Serbian sound, not an English letter name.
2ConvertSwitch both directionsPractice Latin to Cyrillic and Cyrillic to Latin so neither script becomes a crutch.
3ReadUse varied wordsMix short, long, familiar, and unfamiliar words. The goal is accurate reading, not memorizing one list.
4RepeatReturn to hard lettersGive extra practice to letters you confuse and let strong letters appear less often.

Ten focused minutes is enough for one session. Accuracy matters more than speed at first. As the shapes become automatic, your reading speed will rise naturally.

Turn recognition into real reading

Practice a few letters and words at a time, hear clear Serbian audio, and let difficult letters return more often.
